  Event Schedule:

  • 5:00 PM: We’ll kick off the evening at the Belle of Dayton in their elegant Van Buren Room. Enjoy a curated selection of wines and spirits, and take the opportunity to mingle with fellow wine enthusiasts in a relaxed and sophisticated setting.
    
    

  • 6:30 PM: Our culinary journey continues at Lily’s Restaurant, (329 E. 5th St, DaytonOH 45402) where we’ll indulge in a delicious dinner. Known for its exquisite cuisine and warm ambiance, Lily’s promises a dining experience that perfectly complements our evening of wine tasting.

  Whether you’re a long-time member or new to our group, we look forward to sharing this special evening with you.

  August Hidden Gem takes us to Cartridge Brewing, a true hidden gem tucked along the Little Miami River in Kings Mills.  The drive out is half the fun - rolling hills, green meadows, and country roads lined with young summer crops.

  Cartridge Brewing is housed in the beautifully restored Peters Cartridge Factory, originally opened in 1916 and once the heart of the Kings Mills community.  The bar area sits in one of the old factory spaces -- industrial charm meets a warm inviting atmosphere.  The brewery sits right along the Little Miami Scenic Trail, so consider coming a bit early to stroll along the river or bring your bike for a ride before we get together.

  4:00 pm -- Meet outside the bar, then head in for our first drink, a bit of history on the building and property, and appetizers

  5:00 pm -- Order dinner from the menu in the dining area off the bar

  Cartridge proudly brews old-world beers and modern specialty styles on site, paired with a creative, seasonal food menu.  Come thirsty, come hungry, and come ready to discover this Hidden Gem with us!

  September's Dine Around is at Ray's in Clayton. First drinks will be available at the bar beginning at 6PM or take a self guided tour of their extensive wine racks & micro Brewery cooler to select your evening drinks.  At 6:45 we will be seated in Ray's Party Room for dinner.

  Interesting Ray's Story:  Ray and his brother Tony had always planned to go into business together.  However, Ray was diagnosed with cancer and died before that happened.  Tony decided to make that original dream that he shared with his brother  a reality and to name the new business in tribute to his brother, Ray. It is so much more than just a retail store/restaurant/party room ... it’s a living memorial to the brothers’ bond and love.  More info about Ray's and their menu is available on their website .

  Put your taste buds to the test in a fun and interactive blind wine tasting experience. Wine sommelier Brian DeMarke will guide guests through several flights of unlabeled wines. Sip, swirl, and savor as you evaluate each pour and choose your favorites—keeping track of your picks along the way.

  Each flight will be thoughtfully paired with a small plate created by the always-creative Urmilla Holloway, adding delicious surprises to the evening.

  Expect a few twists and turns on this blind tasting journey—you never know what might be in your glass!

  The Secret in Building 26?????

  The Secret in Building 26 is a book by author and native Daytonian Jim DeBrosse who will offer a presentation to our group about this fascinating part of Dayton’s role in WWII. Jim’s book covers a history of America’s heroic effort to break the Nazi’s toughest Enigma codes during World War II. And the heart of the operation was hidden in a nondescript factory building at NCR in Dayton, Ohio. The Washington Post said the book “needs to be read… by those who want to understand the indispensable role of information technology in modern warfare.”

  Much has been written about the success of the British “Ultra” program in cracking the Germans’ Enigma code early in World War II, but few know what really happened in 1942, when the Germans added a fourth rotor to the machine that created the already challenging naval code and plunged Allied intelligence into darkness.
  
  Enter one Joe Desch, an unassuming but brilliant engineer at the National Cash Register Company in Dayton, Ohio, who was given the task of creating a machine to break the new Enigma settings. It was an enterprise that rivaled the Manhattan Project for secrecy and complexity–and nearly drove Desch to a breakdown. Under enormous pressure, he succeeded in creating a 5,000-pound electromechanical monster known as the Desch Bombe, which helped turn the tide in the Battle of the Atlantic–but not before a disgruntled co-worker attempted to leak information about the machine to the Nazis.
  
  After toiling anonymously–it even took his daughter years to learn of his accomplishments–Desch was awarded the National Medal of Merit, the country’s highest civilian honor. 

  Jim DeBrosse, the author of The Secret in Building 26, is a Dayton native and former reporter for the Dayton Daily News. He now lives in Indianapolis with his wife, poet Karen Kovacik.

  Our November Dine Around takes us to one of the Miami Valley’s newest and most exciting dining discoveries — the Anatolian Grill Mediterranean Cuisine in Centerville, a restaurant that’s already generating quite a buzz in the area.

  Anatolian Grill brings the rich culinary heritage of the Mediterranean and Anatolia to the table, with a menu inspired by generations of family recipes, prepared with fresh ingredients and authentic spices. We can expect kebabs, pastas, and a thoughtful selection of chicken, lamb, beef, and seafood dishes.

  The space features traditional Turkish décor, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for an evening with fellow MVIFS members.   Join your MVIFS friends and family for a wonderful celebration of the Holiday Season at Centerville's own Yankee Trace Country Club.  The buffet dinner menu includes:

  Gourmet Buffet:

  • Yankee Salad
  • Grilled Steak Peperonata
  • Chicken Piccata
  • Salmon with Bourbon Sause (served on the side)
  • Rice Pilaf
  • Green Bean Almondine

  Desserts:

  • Assorted cookies, mini cheesecake, lemon bars, and brownies

  
  

  Reception begins at 6PM.

  Hor d'oeuvres during the Social Hour (6:00-7:00) include bacon-wrapped scallops, coconut shrimp, mozzarella cheese sticks, and you can enjoy a complementary glass of wine or champagne courtesy of MVIFS.  

  Cost is $70 per person. There will be a cash bar available for cocktails or additional glasses/bottles of wine. Dress is holiday attire. 

  We have a newly renovated event space at Yankee Trace, but seating is limited. We can only allow 70 members to attend this MEMBERS ONLY event, but a waitlist will be established when and if we reach 70 registrants. Should less than 70 sign up, we will open the event to guests, and we'll send out notices about the change.
